A Hard Life

Clete Cooper was only nine years-old when he and his parents joined five other wagons going to California to escape the horrors of the war Between the States. The wagon train had traveled about forty miles from the last outpost in north Texas just below the Red River. At first light, while Clete was in the willow brakes by the river gathering the hobbled mules to pull the wagon, a large force of Indians attacked the wagon train and slaughtered everyone in sight. Clete heard the shots and screams, but there was nothing he could do.Before long, the Indians left with all of the mules and horses. They scalped almost all of the dead and took as much loot as they could carry on horse back.Clete worked three days burying all of the dead. He found a canteen that had been missed by the Indians and enough food to survive on. He found and buried a few important items under the false floor of the seat in his parent's wagon.Three days and nights he walked following the wagon tracks back to the little town of Wichita Falls. He was taken in by a couple at the local store. These kind-hearted folks got him hooked up with rancher who had no family of his own.Loss, love and valuable life lessons await as Clete learns what a hard life is and how to make the best of it.
