A SPOONFUL LEFT is a novel set in the contemporary Southwest, told primarily from the point of view of Mark Mallory, a young San Antonio criminal defense attorney. When Mark's father, Scott Mallory, a retired academic, unexpectantly dies in Angel Fire, New Mexico, Mark and his girlfriend, Gabriela Lopez, an immigration attorney, find their carefully planned lives and fast-track careers turned inside out by the old Irish scholar's unbelievably generous and yet perversely impossible bequest -- a lavish lodge in a moderately up-scale ski-resort town with the proviso that they finish the biography of Harold Childress (a notorious Vietnam-era writer) that Scott Mallory had been working on for the past decade. Over the course of their frantic year of dogged literary sleuthing, Mark and Gaby not only complete the biography, but they also manage to open more than one can of worms as they unintentionally uncover a string of fatal yet redemptive truths in the lingering and confusing shadows cast by the buried pasts of both the biographer and his subject. In the process, however, they find in each other and in renewed family ties, a meaningful door to a surprising future.
