Alzira [Italian]

Alzira is a tragic opera in a prologue and two acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with an Italian libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, based on Voltaire's 1736 tragedy Alzire, ou les Am ricains. Premiered at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in 1845, the opera tells a dramatic story of love, betrayal, and cultural conflict in colonial Peru.

Set against the backdrop of the Spanish conquest, the opera explores the clash between the indigenous Inca people and the European colonizers. The plot revolves around Alzira, an Inca princess, her love for Zamoro, an Inca warrior, and the conflicts that arise when the Spanish governor, Gusmano, also desires her.
