Jesse is a loner who loves the outdoors. He understands nature in a way he doesn't understand people, even his own family. He feels in control there in a way he can't at home. When hiking in the mountains, Jesse meets a young woman who seems to be in trouble. He befriends Maria, but he's suspicious of her companions. Her brother Rick behaves oddly, while her tough boyfriend Shaw controls the group. Still, charmed by Maria, Jesse promises not to tell anyone that he met them.

When Jesse returns home, he learns that something has happened - but no one will tell him what. Angry at his family's secrets, Jesse takes off the next day for a camping trip. He's determined to rescue Maria. But when he rejoins his new friends, he discovers why they're hiding - and it's deadly knowledge. He'll need all his wilderness skills, and all his courage, to survive.
