Bethel Presbyterian Church, in northern Fayette County, Kentucky, was founded by Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in 1787. The names of its members from 1797 to the early 1900s can be found in its cemetery. This information, along with church records dating back to 1816, provides a wealth of genealogical data about church members and their families, including those identified in records as "slaves" and "colored." In addition to the genealogical data that can be gleaned, the history of the church itself is significant. At the turn of the 19th century the church's minister, Robert Marshall, became a leader in the Great Awakening. As a result, the birth of the Christian Movement in Kentucky took place in April 1804 at Bethel Presbyterian Church.
