Book Overview

The battle for the White House following the election of November 7, 2000, was arguably one of the biggest controversies in U.S. history. And one woman stood at the center of the storm-Katherine Harris, Florida's secretary of state. As the Florida recount unfolded in a maze of bizarre events, Harris was faced with the challenge of a lifetime. What enabled her to maintain her integrity, stick by her guns, and hold true to her principles? Here she tells all. In "Center of the Storm, " Harris discusess the behind-the-scenes negotiations and backroom bartering that everyone suspected, but no one dared disclose. Through never-told-before anecdotes, she reveals seventeen essential skills that helped her not just survive but thrive. She clearly illustrates how we, too, can learn these skills that will help us in times of crises.

An Inspiring Book

I have my differences with Katherine Harris, but I bought her book after learning she was planning on running for the US Senate and I was very impressed with her thoughts on leadership and what is needed to practice solid leadership. An enjoyable read, it is a must for anyone who loves politics.

More Than It Appears

I was initially disappointed, expecting a chronology of the Florida debacle, while it seemed to be was a work of personal philosohy.I quickly changed my mind, however. The chronology of events is there, interwoven with the narrative, serving as concrete example for the application of Ms. Harris' personal philosophy, which is quite astute. She is very well read, drawing on such diverse sources as Abraham Lincoln, G.K. Chesterton, King Solomon, Vaclev Havel, to name just a few. What was also there was the unfairness of the media, who have no compunction against the ad hominem attack (e.g., Ms. Harris' makeup.) Harris manages to turn the lights around, exposing the reporters, giving us a picture of some pretty ugly and shameful conduct. No doubt that will win her some bad reviews--there's still a lot of bad blood out there, particularly among the sore losers. But this is one courageous lady, an inspiration to anyone who might find himself in need of moral strength, but especially to anyone in a leadership role. It is a valuable handbook for those who might someday face the kind of difficulty Harris did.

Courage Under Fire

This book is exactly what I thought it would be, a harrowing account of a courageous official who stood up for her principles and upheld the law under tremendous pressure from powerful forces to do otherwise. The book is divided into 12 principles that Ms. Harris holds dear and how those principles helped her stand her ground when partisan Democrats tried to force her to ignore the law. She explains how she developed these principles and where she comes from. What I liked best about this book was the anecdotal and factual evidence of media distortions and gross inaccuracies that were spread about her. She explains how hyper liberal publications like the New York Times spread direct lies about her in a pathetic attempt to concoct a story. A story based on nothing but groundless conspiracy theory. Ms. Harris debunks some myths that the media has propped up and still never apologized for. She injects facts where there is conjecture and sheds light on some important topics. I don't find this any more self serving than anyone who is trying to defend their good name and ward off malicious partisan attacks from people with an ideological axe to grind. To the reviewer who states that Harris was the chair of the entire Bush campaign, this is a half-truth. She was co-chair of the Florida Bush campaign and at no time did ANYONE tell her to "cook the books". That term doesn't even apply to this arena and it makes me wonder if someone who would use it in this context even knows what it means. Bottom line: She upheld the law and withstood a barrage of left-wing attacks from people who wanted to ignore the law and change the rules after the game was played simply because their candidate didn't win. For that alone she will stand out in history as a person of integrity and honor, qualities we don't see enough of anymore.

Seaside

This book makes an excelent presentation of the Florida recount and makes the truth obvious even to the most liberal reader. Ms Harris' platforms for riding out the storm will help leaders to focus on what really matters; to do the right thing!
