First of all, the author James M. McPherson states that his sympathies lie with the Union side of the Civil War. So, we can see what direction he is coming from in the formation of this book.
This book gives great detail about Jefferson Davis as a person and his health. This gives a blow-by-blow explanation of the outcomes of different aspects of the war, the effect it had on Davis, and the effect he had on the war.
The book relies on the reader being familiar with the times and events before reading. For everyone else, there are a lot of references that will need reading. Then we get a different insight into those events as seen by the author.
Even though no two wars are ever the same, this book would make a good background read for historians and anyone contemplating a military career.
