The renewal of St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Marietta, Ohio, has led to the discovery in our history of what is known as Mercersburg Theology, the theology and teaching of John Williamson Nevin and Philip Schaff at the German Reformed seminary at Mercersburg, Pennsylvania in the 1800s. However, that theology was not new, but was a restatement of the original Calvinistic theology of the Protestant Reformation. It followed the path of the European Reformation in distinction from the English Reformation, which was a later development. As interesting as all of this theology is to those who study it, it doesn't connect with ordinary church people who haven't studied it. So I have chosen to provide the biblical connections of this theology in sermonic form rather than to dialog with the various theologians. Church people are looking to understand the Bible, not the history of theology. So in these pages you will find my effort to express various elements of Mercersburg Theology, the original theology of the Protestant Reformation, in sermons rather than through theological argument.
