New York City has captured the public imagination like no other city on earth, and New New York offers compelling evidence that the previous decade has only reaffirmed is undisputed role as icon, crucible and arbiter of architectural achievement. The architecture of New York, like its culture, thrives in an environment of unprecedented diversity and creative energy. The last ten years saw the application of fresh ideas in the design of buildings, both large and small. This culture of invention transformed entire neighborhoods, infiltrating the city's restaurants, galleries, loft apartments, libraries and fashion boutiques, and invigorating the skyline with new skyscrapers. New New York embraces the work of more than seventy architects, ranging from established Manhattan practices, to interrational icons, and a host of emerging design firms at the vanguard With over ninety projects, this comprehensive volume is a dynamic portrait of a resurgent, irrepressible city. Featured projects include: Renzo Piano's New York Times Headquarters, OMA/Rem Koolhaas' Prada NY Epicenter, the Polshek Patnership's Rose Center for Earth and Space, Frank O. Gehry and Gordon Kipping's Issey Miyake Tribeca, Raimund Abraham's Austrian Cultura Forum, Tod Williams & Billie Tsien's American Folk Art Museum, Michael Maltzan's MoMA QNS, and the towers and theaters of the 42nd Street Redevelopment. A section is devoted to the finalist schemes for the World Trade Center site, and includes designs by SOM/SANAA, Foster and Patners, United Architects, THINK and Studio Daniel Libeskind. Book jacket.
This book was excellent. I bought it as a gift for someone, but I wasnt able to part with it. I really began to appreciate modern architectures presence while living in New York, a city that had no lack of classical architecture. The interplay between buildings, the architects vision and the idea of what a city can be to its inhabits are omnipresent ideas to me everytime I see a decent new building.
