The Danger Habit: How to Grow Your Love of Risk Into Life-Changing Faith

You've been called adrenaline junkie, thrill seeker, permanently out of the box, difficult, and just plain crazy. And mostly, it's true. Whether you show your radical streak in extreme sports, supercharged business ventures, or high risk relationships, you have a full-blown danger habit . As far as you can tell, you were born with it. And honestly, you wouldn't have it any other way... Except when your danger habit betrays you. Then your craving for adventure turns into a magnet for disaster. You leave a trail of broken commitments and unwise decisions. You get trapped in stupid addictions. You hurt the ones you love. And you end up feeling like a big mistake. But what if you were created extreme for a purpose? What if the radical faith God has in mind for you doesn't have to come with a dark side? What if it actually turned out to be your ultimate rush? In his fast-paced book, The Danger Habit , surfer and lifelong adventurer Mike Barrett explores the mindset of born radicals and the promise of what he calls "adventure faith." He combines personal story telling, raw honesty, and biblical wisdom in a reading experience that will capture your imagination and motivate you to reach for your huge life mission in Christ. Story Behind the Book "I caused significant pain to my own wife and kids while struggling with an addiction to risk, the pursuit of extreme sports, and an overwhelming feeling of being bored with many Christians and standard church life. My epiphany came a number of years ago when God broke through it all and showed me how 'propped up' my life was without His real presence and power. In the end, we sold our suburban home, moved to the Oregon Coast , and started a ministry to surfers. Countless lives were changed; my wife and I even became pastors. Once dead to the life I had pursued, God gave me back an adventure I could never have previously dared hope for." Mike Barrett

Danger Habit is an effective tool.

Danger Habit was a great resource for me personally. Conventional education taught me that my inability to focus, short attention span, and non-conforming ways were a weakness. Barrett helped me re-think how God has wired me. As a pastor in a church I wondered how I could put this book to use, and then many people came to mind: my friend who pastors bikers; the young man in one of our small groups who asked if he'd be able to repell off the walls of the New Jerusalem; the skaters in our youth program; the men's hot rod fellowship; my nephew the marine; one women's small group frustrated with the men in their life...the list grows everyday. I recommend the book to pastors, leaders, and readers of all types looking for an effective resource to help change people's lives.

Calling all Complacent Believers - Read this Book!

Growing up in martial arts, rock climbling and biking it is refreshing to see a pastor writing about the Christian life as one of adventure, risk, challenge, and great reward. Mike Barrett is an excellent story-teller that uses the Bible and his own life to prove that Christianity is anything but boring. Encouraging and provoking read. And you don't have to be a surfer or adrenaline junky to get a lot out of this book. Enjoy.

Get pumped up with this read!

This really lets the adrenaline junky get some perspective for life. Not bad for us "wanabees" as well. It really helps you want to get out of your comfort zone and pursue developing a relationship that Christ wants you to have. Radical people need to do radical things for God. No boredom here!!

Unique - A Great Story Filled with Practical Insights

Mike Barrett has lived it - I'm tired of reading books by people who haven't lived what they are writing about. That's not a problem with this book. His writing authentically represents the reality that Mike has, in fact, lived it. Not only am I tired of reading books by people who haven't lived what they are writing about, I become disillusioned when they attempt to tell it in a way where their "voice" gets lost (typically by an overzealous editor).Once again, that's not a problem with Mike's writing. Far too many books authored by pastors claim to be reveal the human side of their struggles with faith. Most are incredibly unsuccessful. The Danger Habit is a triumph and restores my confidence in clearly Spirit-led writing about "real" life and a Christian faith that meets the soul of my life...one I can relate to...and so will many, many others. I was blessed by this book. You will be too. Here's a quote from page 28: "And God needs some of us to be change makers, not routine sustainers, to live dangerously, not just enjoy reading about it, to pioneer new ways of thinking and living because the old ways are tired and boring." Buy this book. Life this life. Thank you Mike Barrett. I hope this is thefirst of many to come.

Never a dull moment...

Too often, Christians are characterized as being boring--and too often we justify our reputation. The assumption is that once we become Christians our lives of excitement, intrigue and risk ends and we settle into our comfortable existence. If that is where you find yourself at then this book is for you. It will challenge its readers to find out what true living is--being a part of a great adventure called life with God as its author and creator. Using great stories and illustrations, this book is rich with valuable insights and lessons that we can all learn from. Terrific read!
