Pride, greed, envy, anger, lust, gluttony, and sloth--although the so-called seven deadly sins were originally a medieval convention, contemporary culture still finds each sin attractive and evocative. Drawing on the Christian faith, this engaging study examines the origins and meaning behind each of the seven sins. Graham Tomlin also provides suggestions on how individuals might overcome their tendency to commit these sins in a practical and focused manner. Written in a thoughtful and measured style, this is a compelling survey for anyone interested in philosophy and theology, or for those seeking ways to live a more positive life.
Today's society has diluted the 7 Deadly sins down to a 'naughty but nice' status. As a Christian, I knew about the 7 deadly sins, but I never really considered them to be deadly. I'm not into 'heavy' reading, and this was easy to read. I started with just fingering it, then started to read it little by little, and found I kept coming back to it. It explains the seven deadly sins in a way that I had never known or considered. It defines the sins and their roots, and then gives simple illustrative examples. It gives a lot of references to historic writers, but not in such a way that I would be turned off. Please note that I had checked this book out of the library, and think it is well worth buying for my family and friends. BTW - the author is British, so some of the wording is unusual to the American reader.
